Quantum computing is entering a global hardware selection phase
Quantum computing has moved beyond the question of whether qubits can be built. The real contest now is between competing hardware platforms, each trying to prove it can scale into a useful, fault-tolerant machine. This is not a single-country story: the US, UK, Europe, Canada, and Asia are all backing different approaches, and none has yet achieved clear dominance.
Unlike classical computing, which eventually converged on CMOS transistors, quantum computing is still in a multi-architecture era. Trapped ions, neutral atoms, photonic systems, superconducting qubits, and silicon spins all exist today as serious contenders. Each optimizes a different dimension of the problem — fidelity, scale, networking, speed, or manufacturability, and each carries its own engineering bottlenecks.
